What this covers

This guide covers eighteen hotels in four sections. It is written and kept by a small independent editorial group, and it has no commercial relationship with any of the houses described. The pages are meant to be read before a decision, not instead of one.

How the hotels were chosen

Each section was built around a single kind of building rather than a place. A house was included when there was enough published material to describe its structure and its shared rooms accurately, and when it was open to guests at the time of writing. Houses that could not be described from public material were left out.

Which sources are used

Descriptions are drawn from the hotels' own published material, from mapping and street imagery, from architectural press coverage and from local reporting. Where a claim could not be confirmed, the sentence was rewritten so that it says less rather than more. Nothing here is written from a stay, and nothing is written from a press invitation.

What is not here

There are no prices, no star classifications, no room counts, no reviews, no scores and no booking links. Hotels are not compared with one another and are not placed in any order of merit. The section of Canadian resorts describes buildings and their public rooms only.

Reporting an error

Buildings are altered, shared rooms close and houses change hands. If something on these pages is wrong or out of date, write to us through the contact page and say which entry it concerns. Corrections are made to the page itself, and the checked date is moved forward when an entry is reviewed.
